Lexically Independent Structural Priming in Second Language Online Sentence Comprehension

چکیده

This study examined structural priming during online second language (L2) comprehension. In two self-paced reading experiments, 64 intermediate to advanced Chinese learners of English as a foreign read coordinated noun phrases where the conjuncts had either same structure or different structures. Experiment 1 showed that conjunct was faster when it first. effect occurred for structurally marked adjective (e.g., simple grasp problem) but only numerical trend less relative clauses problem grasp). 2 compared unmarked and vs. simple) found significant both. Together, experiments L2 comprehension could occur without repetition lexical head. Moreover, this susceptible inverse frequency effects, with frequent exhibiting greater priming.

Structural Priming in Sentence Comprehension

This study examines structural priming in an on-line reading task that compares reading performance by first and second language readers of English. Robust effects for priming were evident for the second, but not first, language readers, suggesting that priming may occur where there are insufficient sentence traces in memory to support sentence interpretation. The empirical results are simulate...

Structural Priming and Frequency Effects Interact in Chinese Sentence Comprehension

Previous research in several European languages has shown that the language processing system is sensitive to both structural frequency and structural priming effects. However, it is currently not clear whether these two types of effects interact during online sentence comprehension, especially for languages that do not have morphological markings. To explore this issue, the present study inves...

Persistent structural priming from language comprehension to language production.

To examine the relationship between syntactic processes in language comprehension and language production, we compared structural persistence from sentence primes that speakers heard to persistence from primes that speakers produced. Comprehension-to-Comprehension Structural Priming in Adults

Syntactic priming during language production is pervasive and well-studied. Hearing, reading, speaking or writing a sentence with a given structure increases the probability of subsequently producing the same structure, regardless of whether the prime and target share lexical content. In contrast, syntactic priming during comprehension has proven more elusive, fueling claims that comprehension ...

Lexically-driven syntactic priming.

Syntactic priming studies demonstrate that exposure to a particular syntactic structure leads speakers to reproduce the same structure in subsequent utterances. Explanations for this phenomenon rely on either the retrieval of morphosyntactic features associated with the verb in the prime sentence or the preservation of the mapping between message and word sequences in the prime sentence. Two ex...
